OK, we all know it happens. We can see it when one day we are one size, but without any changes in body weight or shape, we are a smaller size. I have jeans I wore in college that I still fit into that are 2 sizes bigger than most things I wear today. Sizes are getting bigger so we (consumers) feel better about ourselves. Companies want us to buy that one dress that fits in a "dream" size simply because of how it makes consumers feel.
As I
mentioned the other day, I went shopping for some clothes to wear for teaching. One particular item I got went a little beyond extreme: it was labelled a XXSP. To translate, the size is an extra-extra-small petite. Yes, I am short (5'3 on a tall day) and petite clothes usually fit me best. But I would in no way say that I am extra, let alone extra-extra small! Granted, I believe this shirt is meant to be worn big, but still, there is no need to make a shirt size that small, is there?
I like the pattern and want to wear it under a cardigan.
There are 2 things that bother me most about this vanity sizing:
1. There is a gender bias that typically affects women. Men tend to have sizes S-XXL, while women have sizes XXS-L (or XS-XL). Companies want women to feel much better about their size (Who would buy an XL when you can fit into a M of another brand?).
2. I never know what size I am. Even measurements are off. Because pants tend to be the hardest to fit me, I have tried to rely on measurements and sizing guides when buying online. Even these have not worked lately.
Now if only race directors could get in on this and start getting us smaller women shirts that actually fit! I am tired of having too many oversized Men's Small race shirts.
OK, rant over! Have a fantastic Monday everyone!
Anyone have any tips for ordering clothes online to make sure the size fits the first time?
You're so right--the trend is crazy! I even noticed that the medical gowns you get at the doc's office are getting huge and when I asked the doc if it was my imagination, she told me that today's adult small was equivalent to an XL back when she was in med school. It is insane!
ReplyDeleteAnd totally agree with you on the mens/womens shirts for races. I have so many shirts like that I'll never wear.
That is crazy! The last thing I would want if I had to be wearing is a medical gown is for it to be huge and over-sized...
DeleteI'm a victim of the vanity sizing advertising angle! I admit it! A couple of weeks ago I bought a dress I didn't need just because it fit me and was a size 2. Let's be serious, I look, walk, and EAT like a size 6. Oh well, it is a great dress!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I love the shirt.
Thanks! Yeah, a size 2 is the new 6! I feel bad for the people who really are size twos and have been reduced to double zeros.
Deleteyup. that's me. need to shop in the girls department sometimes....... not so fun... but cheaper :) so i rely on goodwill a lot too :)
DeleteWho invented cardigans because that is a style I simply don't understand, and I feel like all of my fellow teachers, who are women, wear them religiously. What do I know though? Ha
ReplyDeleteHa! They are the more comfortable and casual version of a blazer.
DeleteI definitely agree. I never know what size I am either and frequently within one store, I can take an XL and a M into the dressing room in different styles and have them both fit me. So annoying!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by! It is definitely annoying when it is the same store or brand that is inconsistent. Argh.
DeleteI can not stand vanity sizing!! No, I am not no xxxs, whaat?! ugh!
ReplyDeleteHaha I have never seen that size, but I love your take on it. It is annoying how much it changes. I also can never decide what shirt size in a race because I never know how they are sizing. I am a HUGE cardigan fan and was just looking in my closet and laughing at how many different colors of cardigans I have.
ReplyDeletecouldn't agree more it drives me crazy!! I always wonder when I pick up a small what the heck are my MUCH smaller friends going to wear?! Old Navy is REALLLLLY bad about this
ReplyDeleteTotally agree--it's so frustrating never knowing what size to get, and I hate having to try everything on. I understand the joy of fitting into a smaller size, and can also understand why companies would want to capitalize on that, but where does it end???
ReplyDeleteFinding pants that fit is the worst part of buying new clothes! I love cardigans too!
ReplyDeleteAmen - I never wear my race shirts because I can put two of me in them grrr.
